Your Skincare Routine Explained

Skincare can really be quite a minefield these days!  There is so much information out there, new skincare must haves, not to mention literally millions of products and countless super ingredients.  Then there are the ethical questions.  Is it Cruelty Free!?  Where are these products made? Am I increasing my carbon footprint using these products?  The list goes on and on and on.

Wouldn’t it be nice to just have some straight forward, simple information that will help us keep our skin beautifully clean and clear with some added lovely nourishing ingredients that are going to repair and protect our skin day to day.

To breakdown Your Skincare Routine, we have split the information into 3 groups depending on what you are looking for.

Firstly, Skin Staples

An absolute must!!  For everyone, if you are 18 or 80, wear a full face of makeup every day or prefer to be au- natural.  Whatever your lifestyle, we need to be doing this twice a day, every day.  Just 3 little steps;

  1. Cleanser/Makeup Remover

By using a cleanser, you are not only removing makeup/dirt but opening your pores and balancing the skin.  Whether you like to apply your cleanser directly onto the skin and remove with a damp cloth or apply using cotton wool, either is fine.

Even with oily skin this is an important step!

2. Toner

A step not to be missed!  Not only does your toner remove excess dirt and excess oils but it also encourages the pores to close to prevent pores clogging.  Toners also double up as a fantastic facial spritz to cool and refresh the skin.  Apply to cotton wool and gently work around the face or spray directly onto the face and remove with cotton wool.

3. Moisturise

This is the step where you are going to feed and nourish the skin.  Think watering your plants!  We are adding hydration at this point, repairing and nourishing.  Take your time to massage in your chosen moisturiser, massaging in small circular movements and avoiding the delicate eye area.

Even if your skincare routine ends here, your skin is going to thank you for it.  A simple, twice a day basic skincare routine.

However, if you would like to go a step further, let’s take a look at a simple upgrade to the above.

Upgrading your existing routine

You are happy with your basic routine but want to add in a little bit more!? 

  1. Eyes Cream/Gel

To hydrate the delicate eye area, you are looking for a lighter consistency than what your daytime moisturiser offers.  We know this is the most delicate area of skin on the face so we really need to give this special attention.  Tap your chosen product very lightly with the tip of the finger around this area to lock in moisture.

2. Night Cream

An easy upgrade is to include night cream into your routine.  Once your skin is cleansed in the evening you can take advantage of applying a beautifully rich moisturiser specifically for the evening where your skin can fully absorb the product to deeply nourish.

A great upgrade to your routine is to include a daily Serum.  Serums contain a high concentrate of the ingredients thereby penetrating deep into the dermis layer and achieving the full effect of those ingredients.

Apply the serum before your moisturiser.  Serums can feel a little bit tacky at first so ensure that they are fully absorbed before applying your daytime or evening moisturiser.  Tapping lightly around the face and neck and avoiding the delicate eye area.

Pampering & Wellbeing

So, we have covered the basics, looked at some easy upgrades, all pain free so fair!?  Finally let’s add a bit of pampering into your routine.

This should do what it is intended to do and that is Pamper, with a capital P!  Make sure you set the scene.  2 or 3 times a week, set a side 30 minutes, run a lovely bath, light a candle and play your favourite relaxing music.

1. Face Scrubs

This maybe not the first thing that come to mind when you think pamper but for the skin it is a wonderful rejuvenating treatment to give your skin 2 or 3 times a week.  Gently exfoliate by massaging your product into the skin, focussing around the nose, chin and forehead will prevent a build-up of blocked pores and spots.

2. Face Mask

Face masks are a fantastic pamper product.  Amazing for repairing and protecting the skin with an array of wonderful ingredients.  Apply the mask all over the face and neck area (avoid the delicate eye area), lay back and let the wonderful ingredients draw out impurities and excess oils.  Leaving you relaxed with beautifully refreshed skin.

So, it really can be simple to create a wonderfully effective skincare routine. 

Make sure to incorporate SPF into your skin care routine if this is not included in your products. During summer months, we would always recommend applying a separate SPF to avoid sun damage.
